EDEN SECURES IT’S SHARE IN $135 MILLION BOOST FOR REGIONAL FREIGHT NETWORK

Friday, 18 January 2019

Member for Bega Andrew Constance has today announced $1.7 million for Eden under the Fixing Country Roads program.

Mr Constance said that the funding into Eden and the Princes Highway is amongst thirty-three projects across regional NSW to be awarded a share of $135 million, boosting freight efficiency, capacity and connectivity.

“The Eden Port to Princes Highway freight link will provide genuine benefits to the towns and surrounds as we look to move freight effectively and efficiently around the region.

“The funding will see the intersections at Imlay and Alberts Streets and Albert Terrace and Museum Streets upgraded with wider sweeping paths and a stronger pavement stabilisation,” Mr Constance said.

“There is up to 160 heavy vehicle movements per day through this area and providing a stronger, wider, safer path which will improve the freight movements through Eden will have a benefit to our entire region.

“Our freight trucks carry our food, produce and raw materials that support the local community. These projects will ensure freight vehicles get to where they need to be” Mr Constance said.

“These projects improve connectivity between regional centres, state roads and freight facilities, reducing travel times, improving safety, and bring freight costs down.”

Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey, said that the Fixing Country Roads program had reached almost $346 million, funding vital road upgrades delivering better connections to local communities.

“Freight is worth more than $60 billion to the NSW economy. It is critical that NSW has a state of the art freight network as the global marketplace continues to become more competitive,” Mrs Pavey said.

“The volume of freight moved though NSW is predicted to increase up to 28 per cent by 2036, so it is important we make investments now to help meet this future demand.”

To date, The Liberals in government have invested $557 million into 310 projects across NSW, under the Fixing Country Roads and Fixing Country Rail programs.
